Thanks Josh B , nice to meet you as well. I haven't been on here much recently . my truck has been out of commission for about three years . Just getting to the swap . Have everything I THINK I'll need . I learned when I got this truck 17 Years ago to research well ahead of time before starting anything , and to just take my time , solve each issue as it comes up . Always Happy to communicate with other Ranger Enthusiasts .

Hi , currently in the middle of swap . 87 supercab 4x4 . 2.9L ,out , dash out . Firewall stripped inside and out . Front clip removed. Installing , 2006 4.0 L SOHC .
Donor cab , dash firewall is 2003. I see where the brake , clutch pedal assemblies will be an issue for installing the new dash .
The question i have today is . clutch and flywheel for 4.0 L , will this mate up to transmission , bell housing , stock from 2.9L ? The bell housing will bolt to the engine , the splines and pilot on the input shaft are the same, but the distance to release bearing doesn't seem to measure up . Has anyone done this ? Or is there another clutch that will work ? The flywheel thickness is the biggest difference . Can someone please tell me the thickness of the 2.9L flywheel for manual transmission as i no longer have it .
Please look at the TECH PAGE article on 4.0l clutch to 2.9l. It will need the 4.0l starter plate and an OHV 4.0l starter.

Thank you gaz , that tech article was a little helpfull . I have a 4.0L SOHC engine and am trying to keep the FM 146 transmission , but use the 4.0L clutch . Wondering if this works ? I know the bell housing will fit , bolt up to the block .

If your 4.0l is stock and from the 91, it is not the SOHC version, it is the OHV version...either of which will bolt right onto your FM146 with a 4.0l clutch, clutch plate and 4.0l starter but as @bobbywalter stated, it will not hold up to the 4.0l's torque, at least don't expect an extended, happy relationship.

I posted my question under the wrong discussion / thread . the engine is 2006 , and is a SOHC . Thanks for pointing that out . I know correct identification is key to getting the correct info .
