I recently pulled a radio/cassette from the local pick n pull to replace my recently deceased radio/tape player. It wasn't until I was attempting the swap that I noticed the differences:
1. The 'new' tape deck has 2 bundles of wires coming out of the back, rather than plugs hardwired to the back. I'm assuming these are simply extension cords, but I've been wrong before.
2. The 'gray' connector has 6 wires in the bundle, whereas my '88 only plug has 4 wires to plug into it. The tape deck was pulled from an '88, so I'm a bit thrown off.
I found wiring diagrams and believed I had everything correctly mapped out. KOEO, it lights up fine but radio does not activate, nor does tape deck. Attempting KOER, immediate short, truck will not start. I found the following information, and thought I mapped everything out correctly. but boy oh boy the truck didnt like it.
Gray clip from truck has:
BLUE/red - Illumination
GREEN/yellow - Constant 12v
YELLOW/black - Switched/Ignition 12v. (this wire is way bigger than the others)
ORANGE/black. -??
Gray clip from stereo has:
RED/white - Constant 12v
YELLOW/black - Switched/Ignition 12v
BLUE/red - Dash Lights
BROWN - Illumination
BLACK - Ground
PINK - Antenna (not used?)
My immediate though goes to the ground wire, as that doesn't seem to be accounted for in the truck-side wiring. But then I also wonder if I simply don't have the wire functions mapped out correctly. Either way, don't want to fry circuits over something so dumb as a junkyard tape deck.
Sorry if this has been covered someplace else, I'm having a tough time finding any meaningful difference between my old dead tapedeck and the new one, outside of the different harness.
EDIT: photos for reference.
