Welcome to TRS :)

Since you have a 1996 4x4 the speed sensor is on the transfer case so you don't need that on replacement transmission
So you can use a 3.0l 4x4 Automatic from 1995 thru 2008(last year for 3.0l)
3.0l Ranger or Mazda B-3000 4x4 will plug and play

You have a 4R44E model now, but a 5R44E will also work for you, just has 2 extra sensors on the outside that won't be used
Needs to be from a 3.0l to match engine bolt pattern
And a 4x4 so transfer case can be bolted on

The 1998 3.0l 4x4 is a 4R44E and will plug and play in your 1996

No, both are EXACTLY the same transmission internally, Ford used Computer software added a 5th gear to the 4R, so Ford could advertise it as a 5R because it was now a 5-speed, the new "gear" was between the old 1st and 2nd

If you put a 5R into a Ranger with 4R software it will work as a 4R

If you put a 1995/1996 4.0l 4R into a 1998-2000 4.0l it would act like a 5R, 5-speeds, because 1998-2000 4.0l computer has 5R software

But in 2001 Ford also added 2 external sensors required by the 2001 and up 5R software
This is when all Ranger computers got the 5R software
So you can't use a 1995-2000 4R in a 2001-2011 Ranger, because they don't have the extra sensors
But YOU CAN use a 2001 to 2011 5R in a 1995-2000 Ranger as a 4R, or 5R in the case of 1998-2000 4.0l Rangers

5R software turns on OverDrive whole still in 1st gear, this adds a 5th Ratio(gear), so a new 2nd gear
Automatics have "Ratios" not specific gears like a manual transmission
They have planetary gear sets that can do multiple ratios

Toyota 2JZ?
Its an inline 6 and 31" long, just pulleys no cooling fan..................and 27" tall

The 302/5.0l OHV V8 barely fits at 27.5" long, and 21" tall

Gonna need some custom firewall and grill work to squeeze that in, unless you go air cooled, lol
Might get away with a 4" body lift for height issue, its 18" wide so you may be able to set it down lower in engine bay since you need custom motor mounts anyway
