Ok guys i have a 1996 Ranger Splash that was a 4 cyl. I put a 1996 Ford Explorer engine with 1.7 rockers and a C-4 Tranny in it i have gotten everything to work except the Tach. Now the dash cluster came out of a 1997
V8 Explorer. I have tried all the things that everyone has told me i have moved the black and yellow wire from pin 8 and placed in pin 16 of the 16 pin connector it seems to have no change on the tach it works but is not correct.
Does anyone have any idea what i can do to make this work does it matter that i am using the coil pack setup from the explorer and i am using the explorer computer and everything.:icon_confused:

Your 97 V8 tach needs 4 connections to read correctly:

Power on RD/YE (this should be OK if other gauges are working)

Ground on pin 2 of the 12-pin connector (this should be OK if other gauges are working)

RRM signal input from PCM on pin 15 of the 16-pin connector (If the tach works but is just inaccurate, then this input is probably OK).

Ground on pin 16 of the 16-pin connector (verify w/meter that this actually has good continuity to ground)

[Pin 8 of the 10-pin must not be connected to anything.]

Ok now we are getting somewhere but th only wire that i have on the 16th pin of the 16 pin connector is the wire that i moved from pin 8 the blk/yellow wire from the other connector . The 16th pin was empty all my other gauges do work and the tach even works but it is inaccurate. So tell me what you think. Do i need to put the 8 pin connector back where it was or take out of the cluster all together and ground the 16th pin or what .I am open to suggestions. Thanks

The dash harness provides one of three possible ground combinations and that is how the tach is calibrated for 4, 6 or 8 cylinders.

For a 97 Explorer cluster with an 8-cylinder, you need this combination:

Good chassis ground connected to pin 16 of the 16-pin
Nothing attached to pin 8 of the 10-pin.

No, 94 and earlier used a completely different dash, cluster and tachometer.

I think some of the early Ranger tachs had a cylinder selector switch. I've also heard of V8 Ranger swappers substituting a V8 tach from another Ford model line. I couldn't say whether either of these methods would apply to your 1990 or not.
