I have an elderly friend who owns the above mentioned truck, she said she was trying to start it 3 years ago with jump starter and sparks flew from passenger side of engine compartment. now nothing happens with a new battery. I attached a new battery and dash lights came on but no sound when I turn the key.
I didn't see any damage under the hood ,what should I try before having it towed to a shop? Thanks

Not much wiring on the passenger side of engine bay in 2006 4.0l Ranger
Only alternator wiring comes to mind but it does have direct connection to battery positive so would SPARK alot, its harness runs around the back side of intake over to the fuse box and battery

I would go thru engine fuse box, pull one fuse at a time and look at it, or test it
Then do the relays one at a time look at the underside and the base

Automatic has a No Crank switch if its not fully in Park or Neutral
So try Neutral and see if it cranks
Not uncommon for Ford column shifters to get loose, so while trans goes into Park the No Crank switch doesn't, which is why you try Neutral

2006 does have PATS(passive anti-theft system)
There is a THEFT light on the dash it flashes every few seconds with key off
With key on the THEFT light should come on and then go OFF, if it starts to Flash Rapidly then No Crank/No Start
If you leave the key on and wait 45-60seconds it will start to flash a 2 digit code, 11 to 16

Low voltage will trigger PATS as well with key on

Thanks for your response and information, I will check those things.
