hello, I got myself an 87 BII, with a swiftly dying 2.9:sad:.
I have an opertunity to get a 92 i believe explorer, from what i have read its more or less bolt in, but i was wondering if there may be some wireing issues?
both are manual, 4wd. any help would be great!

Yes, there are several people that have done this swap including myself. I swapped a 94 Explorer 4.0L into my 88 Bronco II. I did this swap a little over a year ago and have been running problem free ever since. There is quite a bit of work involved in this process and I too recommend looking in the tech library for information. The wiring can get frusterating and confusing at times so make sure to have good wiring diagrams on each. There were times when I just had to walk away and try again the next night to keep my temper in check. I eventually found I had missed a ground that had been cut off the main harness which was enabling my Bronco to start. Even after all the work it was well worth it in the long run. I wouldn't have it any other way. Good Luck!

The 4.0SOHC wasn't introduced until midyear in 1997

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you get the Cat and Y-pipe from the explorer donor.

the cat isn't materially different aside from the mounting flanges at either end.

the '87 style Y-pipe you have now WOULD bolt up to a 4.0, but they
tend to leak (badly) between the Y-pipe and the cat.

the rear flange is a "pilot tube" that is intended to be used with a replaceable
"donut" that a "Flared" extension pipe couples to.

the early "Flat flange" is also leakage prone and doesn't tolerat "flex" well.

all this is proving useful im now in the process of lining a 4.0 powertrain up now (as mine now has a blown head gasket:fie:).

I found it easier to make a chart with the donor on one side and the reciever on the other and just make the connections on paper prior to cutting wires. Here's one someone did for their BII 4.0l swap.
