hey i had a few questions on exploers i was wondering if anyone knew about doing a 4.o swap from a 93-94 explore to an 1989 ford ranger the reason i am asking is i am wondering how simple they ar or how complicated it can be i might be getting a wrecked exploer with a 4.0 in it it is 2 wheel drive and has a 5 speed well i need a vehicle to get back and forth to work when i go back to work i am wondering if the tranny can be adapterd to a transfer case and if i have to change drive lines or anything like that i am hopeing this will be a somewhat simple swap but i am not for sure if it will or not i would just like to have some sorta of background on this kinda of swap first i have read about it in the tech libary but would like to talk to someone who might have done a similar swap any help is greatly appreicated thanks

You will have to completely disassemble the transmission to swap out a 4x4 tail shaft in place of the 2x shaft. They are different lengths and you can not use a transfer case with a stock 2wd trans with out doing so.
You can swap the 4.0L in fairly easily from what I hear. They make all sorts of swap parts to make it easier.
Weather or not you have to alter the final drive line depends on the transmission you use.

I know the wiring is fairly simple I just swapped a 1996 explore 4.0 into a 1988 2.9 2wd ranger. It wasn't too difficult hardest part was figuring out where to mount the ecu.
