HI! I got an '04 4.0 sohc Ranger. I'm looking to do a build with it. I plan on getting a second engine to build up then swap in. I have questions! Will sohc heads fit on an ohv block? ( I can get an ohv block for free) Turbo or supercharger? I was thinking twin turbo but I'm open to suggestions. Will a cam make that much difference? Any weak links ( other than the timing chain, I know about that weak link...pun intended lol) Thanks in advance!

Oh, lemme beat you to the punch too, no. Not gonna V8 swap. I'm in PA and from what I understand if I V8 swap it'll never pass emissions. Also, gas. If I were to do a swap like that it'd be for the ecotech twin turbo. But, $$$.. Yes I understand that I'll be spending on getting all the ponies out of the 4.0 but that can be spread out.

#1 question is.. what's your budget?

We have a few members who own blown 4.0s.. but they're keeping things (like boost) mild with stock motors. With all this twin turbo talk I'm betting your looking for more than mild lol.

Budget is kinda variable. My plan is to start with a block ( or whole engine) and tear it all down and kinda start at the bottom and work my way up. So, I say variable because I'll research, plan parts, save for parts, then install parts. So, while I don't want to spend unnecessarily high amounts, I can save for a few months to drop 2k or so on something if need be. I'm in no rush. I read the write up about how to build a 4.0 ohv for power but I'm not sure how much of that will cross over to the sohc.

Right on. Building a 4.0 for anything more than real mild boost will eat up a budget real quick.. Morana racing is one of the only outfits that supplies quality go-fast parts for the motor, take a gander on their website and see what your in for.

I'm over simplifiying this statement, but about the only thing the OHV and SOHC have in common is displacement.

Moddbox sells a bolt on supercharger kit for the SOHC. That will save you time.
Others have run a Procharger/Vortec setup with success.
