while looking for a truck, came upon a 1999 Ranger, 4x4, 4.0, 5 speed automatic tranny. did they have 5 speed autos in those? this isn't an FX4 or anything like that, just an extended cab.

Yes, the 5r55e is the name of the transmission. they started making them in 97 and ranger was the first truck with a 5 speed auto i believe. Both my 99 and 2000 have them.

5spd autos (5r55e just like Mr99Ranger stated) came in the 4.0 Rangers standard from 1997 on if I'm not mistaken.

It is like the rest of the Ranger Bronco explorer trucks but Ford split a gear ratio to get another gear
same gears in 1st and 5th as the earlier transmission 1st and 4th

Interesting. They split 2nd gear from the 4R44E to get 2nd & 3rd.

And yea, that's quite a bit for a used 150K '99. Keep on searchin!
You know, i always wondered why is seemed to shift different from other automatic transmissions, and i guess that it why, its mechanically a 4spd, with the computer engaging im guessing 2nd and 3rd, to create the extra speed.

Another thing i noticed thats odd about the trans (which hopfully is not a malfunction) is if you floor the truck on a slight incline (like a bridge for instance) it tends to hold ethier 3rd or 4th gear (im not sure which) with the rpms sitting right at 5k rpm. But whats wierd is the engine doesnt increase in rpm for a little while, it screams at 5k rpm, and the speed keeps increasing, identical to the function of a CVT transmission. well, until it the speed increases enough to where it shifts to a higher gear.

I heard about a new transmission that doesn't shift. It just has a chain that fluctuates. Anyone know anything about it?

alot of CVTs use belts aswell.

check out the jeep patriot on youtube, they have a few videos of th dash cam with it acclerating so you can see how a CVT sounds on a car. Personally, i would NEVER get one. the rpms seem to be way too high when you gun it. Like literally, withing the 1st few seconds of flooring it, the engine it at redline, and SITS at redline the entire time you have the gas floored. To me, that seems like it would wear the engine out pretty quick if you tend to have a heavy right foot.
