I have a 97 ford ranger 5spd. 4cyl. I have a 4.10 rear axle ratio &
I'm running 235/75/15 tires. Is there a lower (numerically higher) rear end that I could swap in to this truck without converting to an 8.8 rear end. I need a bit more grunt in the low end so i can pull my boat. My truck has 200K + on it so i don't want to dump a whole lot of money into it.

You can get 4.56:1 and 5.13:1 but the pinion starts getting really small when you get into the lower gears.

4.56's aught to give you the low end grunt you're looking for.

Should I be able to find this in a salvage yard or will I have to buy the gearset new?

You will have to buy new or used from someone, as it was not a stock ratio.
