just build your motor in your truck now and throw a turbo on it...there is a lot more into it, but making emissions is kinda questionable

the only way i would go with is finding a vehicle thats alreadyfactory turbocharged,i doubt you could find a aftermarked set-up thats california emissions leagel for a ranger, guess ill have to find a mustang,t-bird with a 5.0 and stick that in there.

there were turbo probes after 1990, but they share nothing in common with the ranger.

there is also the ecoboost, good luck getting your hands on one.

your only option is too take the pistons rods and turbo set up from a 87 and build your engine. i dont see why it wouldnt pass if you run the turbo into your stock cat and exhaust system. not sure about california emisions because i dont live their but i dont see why that would not work.

I was under the impression that any modified engine would not meet Cali emissions inspection standards. Can someone from California clarify this?

ive heard that california might ease their smog laws a bit,ill belive it when i see it lol,but the rule with engine swaps are -it has to be the same year or newer, plus it has to be available on that model of vehicle, and it has to have all smog from the year engine that was swapped in it,so for my 90 ranger a v-8 swap would be easiest.

the only "requirements" for a "swap" is the engine HAS to be the same year or newer than the chassis and retain the original smog equipment for the motor. if the gas tank is over 50 gallons you need a second charcoal canister. an engine "change" is changing the engine to another engine that was originally available on that chassis for that year. so a 4 cyl ranger could swap to a 6 cyl ranger engine with no special requirements. the v8 swap for rangers is a little harder because they would either have to smog the v8 as if it were the original engine in the truck OR you smog just the engine as if it were in the vehicle it came from. so for smog purposes your v8 ranger could show up as a mustang gt

edit:i just finished my smog certs for california so this is all fresh info as of january 1st, 2010
