Hello,
My buddy's son bought a 1995 Explorer Sport Expition edition 4x4, 4.0L ohv automatic with 190k on the odometer. He drove it for about a month when he saw the temp swing towards red so he stopped driving. After it cooled off he brought it to his dad's for help.
He changed the Tstat and sent him down the road but the Gage swung towards the red again. My buddy calls me.
I found 2 issues:
1) the radiator cap gasket was cracked and was probably leaking.
2) the new Tstat was a 198° vs the stock 192°.
Upon checking the 198° on the stovetop, it was barely opening after 30 seconds in rapid boiling stovetop water. It took a SOLID 3 minutes to fully open.
We replaced the radiator cap and grabbed a 192° T stat.
30 minutes in the driveway with the hood down idling was solid temp with the stock Gage registering just below dead center.
On the test drive, almost immediately, the temp gage swept to the ¾ mark and held steady. When we are stopped or parked, engine still running, it goes back to a hair below Midway, then when we start moving it sweeps quickly to the ¾ temp position.
Is this normal business in a 3rd Gen 4 liter EX? I am having a difficult time buying this ..(
Any thoughts are welcome.
