what kind of work would be required to convert a standard 2.3 block into a diesel engine?

i'm assuming i'd need to sleeve down the bore to make them stronger, but other than that... i think it could work, and since 2.3s are a dime a dozen and there are so many transmission choices, it could be a better deal than trying to find a perkins or shitsubishi diesel

have fun trying, but it wont work. GM already tried and failed with the 350s.

Are you even aware of the differences in the types of engines? Sleeving the block for strength is the least of your worries, 2.3's, at least the Lima blocks, are notorious for taking retarded amounts of abuse and boost. Doing an iron block 302 swap on a 2.3 turbo car makes it lighter - roll that one around in your head for a bit.

^THAT^

The 350 diesel was a complete failure. Popped injectors, popped head bolts, blew head gaskets more than the 6.0s. Absolute disaster. What you are suggesting here is roughly the same idea.

A turbo gas engine usually has lower compression than a NA engine, so it wouldn't see that high of compression all the time.

For what little it is worth going the other way usually works out pretty good though, they last darn near forever. :icon_thumby:

a few years back 8-lug or dp had an article about a 12 valve cummins converted to gas. Iirc it made 800+ hp on boost alone, then they gave it a 400 shot of nos.

Damnit.i gotta look it up now

I dont think you could keep the heads on it. Diesels have a very high peak firing pressure. I say go with something true and tried. But if you've got to build it, then I wish you all the luck!

it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
what injectors? rods? pistons? crank?

i guess cummins pump and injectors could be incorporated easy enough to work, but the rotating assembly would be expensive.

the head would not like it at all.

Older MB diesel engines are one (relatively) common option. The 603 series made more than enough power for a decent RBV swap. Bobby's done a GM 6.5, and others have put in the 4BT. There are plenty of options that would work better than converting a gas engine.

I wonder if a VW turbo diesel would fit? It's small, have more power and torque than a 2.3. About the only issue would be making an engine that ran a FWD vehicle run a RWD one.

You can make a plate adaptor to bolt that motor to a Toyota tranny from a 22re 4wd easy enough. There are also adaptors for sale if you search hard enough to adapt that motor to a Jeep 4wd tranny, and I'm sure you can make an adaptor to fit the motor to an M5OD, but I haven't ever measured or tried, but I have seen a 1.9 in a Ranger 2wd before. The owner said the hardest part was he had to use the gauge cluster and ignition cylinder from the VW or else the anti-theft would get pissed.
