I'm sure you guys are right about the parasitic losses and tolerances (those were the two points I understand to be related directly to the engine tech), but it looks like a 1976 Chevy Chevette had a 40mpg highway rating w/manual trans. The 2023 Nissan Versa has a 35mpg highway rating w/manual trans. (The Versa's 700lbs heavier, but its engine "flows" more).

100% agree that reducing weight, good tires, etc. all contribute to fuel economy/performance, and I'm sure, though it hasn't been mentioned, that today's technology better serves a wider range of drivers, but I can't see how any of that would contribute significantly to bsfc (the way I drive).

Anyway, wrapping this up (I think), "bsfc" is the idea I was looking for, and I learned a heap. I'm going to put the Lima together with everything standard-- nothing's broke, so no need to replace, but if I come across a set of aluminum pistons for the right price, I'll grab them. Same goes for the cam gear, but if this ever finds its way into a vehicle before I get the cam gear, I'll advance the gear a tooth, ~10 degrees, and if I like it, we'll see...

Pretty sure the test from 76 is different than 23.

Somewhere I have a magazine page saved from the early 80's - '80 or '81 I believe - it was an F series truck ad and it said that they were capable of 30mpg when equipped with the right things. I am guessing by that they meant an inline 6, SROD manual trans, 3.00 or higher gears in the axle, 2wd, no PS or AC, maybe a short box wheelbase. Having owned that exact truck I can tell you that 30mpg is absolutely impossible. Car manufacturers have inflated their estimated MPG for decades. It's more realistic today but back then it was just lies. They could "test" vehicles under absolutely perfect conditions and achieve ridiculous numbers, then advertise them to be capable of that.

Why even respond? You guys have opinions, which is your right, but you've got nothing to back them up while you're responding to my questions. Why bother me with your unfounded opinions, allusions to faith? You turn a friendly inquiry into something unpleasant.

F' off.
Watch yourself. There is nothing unfriendly in this thread, we have given you insight from our own experiences. There is no reason to behave like this, consider this your warning.
