My Ranger is still rocking, even at almost 230k miles. It was 2 degrees out today and I haven't started it up since the Thursday, and that was only to move it to clear the snow from the big bad snow storm. It cranked slow but fired on the first try :headbang:

My question isn't about my Ranger though, it's doing just fine. My question is about an RBV we bought this last fall for my wife since she is an RN now. We bought a 98 Mercury Mountaineer AWD V8 for $3300 with 98k miles on it. After we bought it and drove it around a bit it would cut out, like someone flipped off the ignition or fuel system for about a second. I wouldn't call it it a miss. I've done plenty of work on vehicles and know what a miss feels like. It doesn't stumble like a clogged fuel filter, but like I mentioned, it was like you shut the key off for a second or two. I changed the plugs, wires and all O2 sensors and it ran great after that.

Here lately the heater motor will stay on for about a second or so after you shut the key off, and the engine has started the cutting out, but for a much shorter time. Now it feels almost like a miss, but it's such a hard miss it doesn't feel like a misfire. It's more like the complete cutting out, like before but much shorter duration.

I've considered the ignition switch, due to the heater motor staying on for a short while, but I don't know. I'm not keen on Ford issues like I am GM cars, so here I am asking the RVB pros.

Any help/insight given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time, fellas.

I've never looked into that new a models electrical system but I've heard that some of them have a something called a GEM that might control that kind of thing. Might be worth a look to see if it even applies.

Also, I wonder if it might be as simple as a bad inertia switch?

Thanks, I'll have to look into the GEM. I might bypass the inertia switch for a couple days when it gets warmer (-11 right now) for giggles.

The odd thing I didn't mention before was the old cutting out only did it on acceleration, this one is most noticeable under cruise.
