So I was doing my pre-wheeling inspection and I noticed I can move my d-shaft inside the carrier bearing about a half inch in each direction. I'm assuming it's shot, and I already bought another one.

Now I haven't taken a real good look at it on how to replace it, but I'm assuming you have to remove the shaft. Do you have to seperate it at the u-joints? Any kind of special disassembly required? I'm sure I can figure it out, I'm just tryin to get an idea of what I'm getting into.

First of all if your drive shaft is moving around and its not a shot u joint, then your pinion bearings are loose and probably shot, not the carrier bearings. There are 2 bearings on the pinion, and you need to completely disassemble the entire diff to remove the pinion and get to both bearings and both races. You will need to replace the crush sleeve sets your pinion bearing preload. If you have never been into a differential before, this probably isn't a job for you.

I have been into the inside of a diff before. I've regeared axles before. It's not near the rearend at all. It's inside the carrier bearing. About three feet from it. Thanks for the concern tho Sasquatch.

Well I'm about to check it out. Thanks for the help.

He talking about the center carrier bearing on the driveshaft.

Not sure the full procedure on it (I think it's pressed together somehow). I always just swap in a '98-'00 one-piece shaft instead, eliminating that whole center bearing thing entirely (much better setup).
