Cat Shields

Good morning all,
I am wrapping up installing replacement cats on my truck. To get the old ones out I had to remove a catalytic converter heat shield from the drivers side that was shielding it from the transmission shifter cable (that’s my guess). Now that the new ones are in, the shield won’t go back in. Do I need to have it or should I ditch it?

I would wire it in there if I had to, that also makes another step for a thief to go through and every step there is a plus

Those things can get wicked hot. I would recommend reinstalling it somehow.

Well, I tried everything to get it back in, but it won’t clear. I wrapped up the end of the O2 sensor, but if I left the shield off, would the shift cable end and anything else that connects to the transmission be fine?

If it had a heat sheild originally, I'd feel better trying to do something to protect the shift cable. One idea, is you can get the braided fabric heat sheilding, like used to protect the clutch line from the Y-pipe, from a good parts store. Maybe slip some of it over the cable?

I'd get a thin piece of galvanized steel and make a new shield- maybe cut a piece of hardware store stovepipe. I've seen cats get hot enough to set carpets on fire and it's easier to make a shield than to replace a truck.
