My tag on the door says I have axle 97= open 8.8 410. I spun the tires in the dirt and took a picture.

The passenger side(left track in pic) was definitely deeper and more pronounced but I looked in the mirror and could see the drivers side spinning.

I doubt it's LS. I can get the same pattern by backing up then booting it in first. If you jack up the rear axle and spin one tire forward, and the opposite tire also spins forward, then you have LS.

Low traction situations are not ideal to test something like that. Open differential gives power to the wheel with the least resistance/traction.

When both wheels have close to the same traction they will both get power through an open differential. The minute one gets more traction than the other power shifts over to the one wheel without resistance/traction.

In your case they both had the same traction (none) so they both got power and spun.

jack it up and spin one tire. One spins forward and the other in the opposite direction its open. They spin together its L/S.

thanks for the reply's.........I blocked the front wheel.......I put the truck in Neutral and jacked the back up at the pumpkin so both rear tires were off the ground.......when I spin either wheel the other does not move at all......

You have an open diff (any slight bit of brake drag will prevent the other wheel from turning, so the driveshaft turns instead).

A properly-functioning L/S diff will easily overcome brake drag and both wheels turn the same direction (along with the driveshaft).

Looks like you have a brake adjustment issue since the other wheels should turn the other way.

I did new shoes, hardware and drums last weak. There was a slight drag on the passenger side wheel when I spun it today. . I will back it off a little.

I usually leave them a little loose and then set and release the parking brake a dozen times. Usually gets them pretty even.
