my trick is to buy a new one, but i know thats not always an option, so the best advice i have is to clean everything up the best you can before disassembling it so that there is a smaller risk of contamintation when you finally pull the seals off and remove the pistons from their bores.

Mine too. Calipers for all of my vehicles have been relatively cheap too.
