So I did some reading around, because I wanted to do an Explorer Message Center Swap. The one thing I kept getting hung up on was the Fuel Flow signal, which is used for all the fancy MPG computations. So I grew a pair, drilled a hole into my pin 34 on my computer, and found it was outputting a signal.
So what can you do with a Fuel Flow indicator?

I'm in the process of swapping in my Taurus Digital Cluster, got everything working except the temperature sender. I have my message center working with temporary wiring, the next step is to decide the physical placement and get that installed.
If you have an EEC-V, I would check out to see if your pin 43 is alive as well, as that's supposed to the the Fuel Flow indicator on those computers. If it is, then you can at least get a Message Center swapped in too!
