Curious as to what members have used to lift their engine out of their trucks when they didn't have access to a engine lift?

For the record i have my engine down to the short block, so it is a fairly bit lighter then the engine as a whole already.

if I didn't have access to an engine hoist, I wouldn't undertake an engine swap. and the number of engine swaps that I have completed numbers in the dozens, and dozens.

if it is a matter of life & death. knock a hole in the drywall of your garage ceiling, run a strong metal beam across the joists, and use a come-along to pull it.

don't have a garage? people use things called "A-frames", or "swing sets" that are built to look exactly as they sound. and again, you use a come-along or something to lift it out.

don't have a "swing set"? go get your hands some scaffolding, run a steel bar across it, and use a come-along to lift the engine out.

I have done it all of these ways in a pinch. but don't like to unless I have to

Your local tool rental has them, not that expensive.
Sure makes things easier.

If you keep an eye on the classifieds you can usually pick one up cheap. I bought mine out of the paper for $25. Didn't even need one when I bought it, it was just too good a deal to pass up on something I knew I would need/want eventually.

Make a lever long enough and you can lift the world :)

Say you need to lift 500lbs
get a 13 foot beam/pole....???

Place fulcrum(pivot point) 3ft in front of weight
Place beam on fulcrum
So you have 3ft of beam on one side and 10ft on the other
Attach weight(engine) to 3ft end.
Pull down on 10ft end with 150lbs of force, you can add weight to this end so less force is needed, I have used buckets and then filled them with water.
"A pint is a pound the world around", 8 pints in a gallon, so 5 gallon bucket of water is 40lbs

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
there was a time i would just pick up a short block 2.9 or 4.0 v6.

a long time before i had grey hair growing anyway.

but like ron says....leverage is key, and i have had to do stupid shit too many times i dont dare try to recall. i am very lucky. even using the proper equipment i have been injured and nearly killed on several occasions.

use a come along or chain fall at a minimum if you do not have a nice hard surface for a typical cherry picker.. a cherry picker is dangerous if its not on a suitable surface.... my truck is pretty big for a ranger and generally when i do engine swaps on others vehicles i do make the front clips of removable as it really adds to safety. i see many guys try to pull the engine and trans together and it is really dangerous to do it that way for the uninitiated and a stock uncut ranger but most get away with it fine.

all depends on what you have to work with...location and tools.

Wouldn't recomend it but I've seen a friend hook the chain to motor then to a tow strap throw strap over a tree limb and hook it to the back of a truck. Broke 3 limbs before finding one strong enough

I cut one long straight tree down. Cut it into thirds. Then put the two larger sections into the ground about 2 feet and the last sections across the top. Used chain to tie the top beam into position. It was nailed at every reasonable position. (Nail halfway through the chain link and folded over.) Needless to say, not done by myself.
