if you wheel in the cold you may want to disassemble the planetary gearset remove the "grease" they use which is like wax and repack it with synthetic grease. Did that to mine as soon as it got cold and was a huge improvement.

the grease they use is crazy. couldnt even wipe it out with a rag. took awhile to get it clean in a partswasher. the solvent seemed to have no affect on it initially. just worked at it and got them clean repaced it using as much synthetic as i could get to pack in there. worked flawlessley and smooth now.

if I had to do it over again i would buy the xrc but if the money was available i would go with synthetic line tho.
This. I have one and he speaks the truth. That damn grease is nasty.

Also, the solenoids are notoriously crappy and will leave you stranded. Happened to me twice. Smittybilt replaced one of them for free (yay) but I was fed up on the last one and replaced it with a HD Albright solenoid. And synthetic line. I'm good now for a while. Other than that it is a strong winch.

i'm still on my original solenoid. but the syn stuff woulda been nice. i was worried bout it scraping across stuff. bu how often is is really scraping across somthing that you cant protect it from ( the line typically doesnt move muc h while winching)
or re-rig it to a different location.

The steel line will be fine for me. Hopefully I will never have to use it. But at least it will give me piece of mind when out on my own.

Also most come with a piece of guard for rocks that you slide where you need it.

I bought the Badlands winch with the $250 coupon, but then bought the warranty so I spent close to what the xrc8 would run you.

I priced some 1/4" plate and will actually cost me less to buy the plate from summit. About $50 just for the one plate that i need. So if u just get the universal plate it will already have the holes and fairlead mount.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. I just ordered it along with the XRC8.

Going to go get some extra pieces of steel.
Hopefully I can get the winch plate welded in place this weekend and maybe get some tube bent also.
