I just got done putting a whole new top end in my ranger and now im having issues. Ive put in new heads, new push rods, new lifters, 5.0 injectors, match ported upper and lower intake, headers, deleted EGR and changed to a 88 ECU.

Ive have a sound (to me sounds like a lifter tick, oil pressure is good) that i cant seem to nail down and now this morning its running like crap and back firing out the intake. I havent messed the with timing chain and not sure how many miles are on it.

Why do you need big 5.0 injectors on a 2.9? Backfiring out the intake means a lean condition, so maybe one or more injectors aren't injecting.

Wouldn't bad ignition timing cause that as well?

it has a Accel coil and accel cap and rotor on it. I changed out the ign control mod and no different. I pulled the plugs and 1-3 looked good but 4-6 were gas fouled. It ran just fine the other day then went to start it today and started this.

I know theres alot of back and forth about the lifter tick on these engines, but my engine had a bad tick to it, and when I tore it down, my cam bearing were non existent, so much that the grooves for the oil were barely visible. I know thats not what you would want to hear, but i would keep that in the back of your mind.

If it wasn't ticking before you redid the top-end, disregard this.

Good luck.

no ticking what so ever before I put the new lifters in. haven't had any more time to mess it. going to do a compression test when I get a change and also double check my ign timing.

finally had time over last week to work on it, found out one of the push rods popped off the rocker. Still need to replace lifters to get rid of the tick
