I would like to install an explorer axle in my ranger, and after reading the write up I have a dumb question, should I drain the fluid out before I weld the new spring perches and shock mounts? I wasn't sure if I could weld a short bit at a time and not have to worry about overheating or burning the oil. Should I figure on replacing the oil anyway just so that it is fresh as part of the regular maintenance?

If you're getting a junkyard axle that you don't know the history of, first thing you should do is pull the cover and inspect it. Oil and RTV are cheap.

+1 on what Ryda said.
if it is a Junkyard axle, pull the cover, drain it and replace the fluid once it's in.
i would even replace the seals. yank the shafts out and replace those while it's out. theyre also cheap and easy to replace, and this way you know they're solid.

Fluid is cheap. Just do it. You don't need to replace the axle seals unless they are leaking and that should be pretty evident. If there is some leaking then replace them. As stated earlier, they are easy. The best way to pull them is just hook them with the end of the axle and pry them out. You should need to do it though. Good luck.

great thanks everyone, I didn't think of the seals, sounds like it would be better to replace them before I put it into service.

Yup, also give you a good chance to check out the axle bearings as well.
