My question is , will an Explorer rear end work if I want top lower my truck 4 inches in the rear , I had read that the Explorer mounts on top of the springs , if this is the case then I dont have to use a flip kit to lower the rear 4 inches , the reason I am asking is I can get an Explorer rear end, Cheap as in free

Yeah it'll work, just flip the center pins in your leaf pack.

are you sure with ranger leafs there will be enough upwards travel? i know explorers have more of an arch to allow the axle over spring to clear the frame on up travel

from what I have read and understand , 4 inch drop in the max you can go without doing a c notch to the frame , so I think it should be good

Pretty sure it's somewhere more between 5-6" drop, but yes, it should bolt up.

Remember the amount of drop is the axle tube thickness (you'd be splitting the difference here between the Ex axle and your stock axle in half) + the spring perch thickness + the leaf spring thickness.

Also remember the Explorer axle is an inch wider than your '96 axle when selecting your wheels so the tires can still tuck in the fenders.

from what you are saying then is I may have to use longer shackles on the rear of the springs to end with a 4" drop .

A set of of Belltech 6400 shackles would probably put you around 4" of drop.
