I picked up a 98 explorer for the wife with a bum motor. It has the gt40p heads and an external EGR. When I look up motors I get prod. time differences. And of course this truck is 8/98. I haven't called the dealer yet to get the exact build date. But my question is can I get away with using a 97 5.0L from an explorer. I found a smoking deal on one. But not sure if the 97's have the p heads or external egr's.

5.0L (VIN P, 8th digit), thru 1/22/98
5.0L (VIN P, 8th digit), from 1/23/98 thru 8/9/98
5.0L (VIN P, 8th digit), from 8/10/98

Those are the options when searching for a motor.

Going from memory, think only the '96' had the internal egr. Think the first couple months of the '97' production they used the GT-40 heads and then switched to the "P" heads. If it's a smoking deal, I'd pick it up no matter what. A picture or quick look would give you the answers.

I'd do those all day long, hardest part IMO was getting the upper plenum back and lined up with the gasket. everything else was cake.

Good thing I am not gonna be dd'ing this thing lol, I'd get myself into lots of trouble.

There was a pretty decent explorer under all that grime and bad motor thing, I got about $1100 wrapped up into it (buying it and all). And my exact prod date is 9-1-98
