Transmission solenoids

I recently bought an automatic 1994 Ranger and the check engine light has come on. I pulled codes (KOEO) and got 629 and 566. Looks like 629 is torque converter solenoid/circuit failure and 566 is 3-4 shift solenoid/circuit failure.

Thats great and all, but how can I determine if these solenoids have actually failed or if there is a circuitry issue someplace else? Any suggestions would be great...I'd rather not get screwed out of hundreds by a shop to replace these parts if it is something much simpler.

Thanks much.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that it is a a4ld transmission on a 2wd ranger. 115k on both the trans and engine. Transmission still appears to shift correctly up to approx 60 mph. Anyway to test the solenoids to see if they are out of spec? Could a different issue be causing a fault for BOTH solenoids at once?

I was just reading another thread one guy said TPS, VSS, mass air flow or computer. check for power to the solenoids battery voltage key on and the grounds are controlled by the computer.

I'll check the power at the solenoids tomorrow (I work a 12 hr shift today). Can the TPS, VSS or MAF cause the computer to throw fault codes for the transmission solenoids?
