gauge cluster lesson learned

and 88 ranger that came without the tach will not accept the gauge cluster from an 88 ranger with the tach.

suck.

Nope, not that early. Sorry.

The later models come prewired.

The earlier ones have one connector different, and an extra wire going to the coil.

It's not too hard to retrofit that harness, though.

my 87 came with a gauge cluster and i wanted a tach cluster. i had to run a wire from the coil in to the cluster and swap my wires over to the new connector.
if you wanted to, the coil wire goes all the way to the end of the engine harness, so you would need the wire from the tach dash harness. you'd put it into the existing harness connector under the hood and run it to the cluster.

The actual connector didnt fit in to the clusters when I swapped them

so I guess Id have to push the little pins out of the connectors, move the connector to the new vehicle, push the pins back into the appropriate connnector in the right spots, and add a wire from the coil to the connector?

will all the rest of the stuff still work properly?

F that. I own both trucks and I know Ill mix up some of the wires trying to swap all that. Ill just add an aftermarket tach.

yea man i have an '86 and it had no tach
went to my local auto zone, picked one up, and 20 min. later i had a tach installed around my steering column...
