I am guessin you got a stick if so and you plan lots of freeway action (not commuting just gettin to the woods!) try 4.56 if you have an auto and the gears are available and affordable get the 4.88. I have a 7.5 and to make a locker work 1 tooth will need grinding.I don't know if you have a 7.5 or 8.8 but before you spend any money read about carrier breaks and ring gear diameter limits with all the different lunchbox lockers-good luck !

4.88 is best for 33s w/3.0L. Though I'm not sure if that ratio is available for a 7.5", you may have to swap to the 8.8" to get it.

mines an auto. i dont drive on the high way ever pretty much. i off road rarely. i just want a little more pep. i got the 7.5 rear end. i mean a 8.8 axle swap out a explorer isnt terribly hard. id rather just keep the 7.5. i wanna lock it cuse of snow. i live in pa and i wanna be able to move cuse its 2wd.:icon_cheers: thanks for helpin guys

i would think 4.56 gears would suit your needs. and iirc, they go from 4.56 to 5.13, no 4.88's for the 7.5. also, if you have the money, i'd go with a Detroit rear locker. very smooth, solid, and reliable. just my $.02.
and welcome to TRS.

A Ranger 8.8 is a 100% bolt-in swap (and would be a perfect candidate for your use).

Any Ranger with the 4.0l will have the 8.8 rear end, no standard ratio. Any year '93' and newer would have the same width., get the 10" brakes. Don't believe any Ranger came stock with the 4.56 gears.

Yep, any '93 & newer 4.0L axle is what you're after (2WD/4x4 axles don't matter, other than ratios offered, though with going to 4.88s, whatever it has won't matter). I believe all 8.8s got 10" brakes.
