You're saying straight pipe to the muffler so I'm assuming you're talking about eliminating the cats. In which case if you do that it will sound like a ricer. Anyone I've heard who got rid of their cats was not only emissions illegal but it sounded like crap. The 4.0 sounds good with the stock cats and a high flow muffler. I've got a flowmaster 40 on mine and it sounds awesome. I've heard a lot of good feedback from people using Cherry Bomb and Magnaflow mufflers as well. Keep the cats and just put the muffler on and you'll be set.

My '92 Ranger 4.0L is running a straight through Cherry Bomb with the converters and it's not very noisy and does not sound like a ricer.

If you really wanna know what a 4.0 will sound like with a straight-through style muffler, I'll get video of mine tomorrow. Take it around the block and stuff, get you a good example.

cats?..cherry bomb?....

Hey whats up dude. Personally I think a cherry bomb will sound just like that... a glasspack with lots of rumbling popping on deacceleration. Not quality sound at all. If you have high flow cats why knock them out? They really dont muffler much and barely cost you any rear wheel ponies. I would leave the rear cat and go with a 2 chamber flowmaster...and then to make it more bass sounding deeper, even more less like a whiney 2 stroke ricer...dump it downward about 6"-1 ft after the muff. I think my trucj still sounds like a v-6 but it does have a much deeper tone than 95% of other v-6's with an exhaust. Cherry bombs....LOL! yeah why not thrush muff's? Ummm because its not 1977!! Hey dont forget your Cragar s/t's and your air shocks!!!!

My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
like shit ...... in case you are wondering ....... a 350 sbc also sounds like shit that way

my explorer was straight pipe with a 36" glass pack ....... sounded like shit

I assume you are looking for a rumbly big block sound at idle .......... 2.75" pipe from the collector, high flow cat, flow master series 40, and another high flow cat (there are only 2 of them right?)

As promised, heres the video of my Ranger with the straight-through exhaust. Sorry it took so long, the video didnt want to upload terribly quick and it took forever for youtube to "process" it.

I'm also posting this in the exhaust part of the forums, as thats where this type of thing belongs.

I does sound good,

but I'd probably get tired of the resonating in the cab....

especially at interstate speed.

Ranger44, the resonating only gets bad when I'm engine braking. I had the passenger window down in that video so it'd be easier to hear the exhaust as it was going down the road.
