So my 88 2.3l runs as it should when started cold, rpm gradually decreased down to 700 or so when warm and idles normally. However once I shut it off for a few minutes and go back to start it when the engine is still warm, it hunts between 300 and 900 rpm and stalls out at stops. Runs fine when accelerating or up to speed.

This is very consistent and predictable. Thoughts?

I would pull codes on it and see if anything unusual pops up... troubleshoot from there. If you feel like firing the parts cannon at it, the coolant temp sensor/throttle position sensor/idle air control valve & fuel pressure regulator would be the first things I'd look at. Could be an EGR issue as well.

Thanks for your help, I had a similar issue due to the coolant temp sensor a couple years ago.
This time it appears to have been a bad MAP sensor. The truck is finally running good again :)
