Hello all
I have been searching for a manual trans for ages for my 4.0 ranger. Luckily, I found an '88 b2 with a cracked block, 105,000 miles for 200$, talked the guy down to 100$ (always use antifreeze people). He said the transmission never gave him any issues, and i couldn't pass up the price, so looks like im going to be running the 'bishi trans till it grenades. Best part of the deal was that it had 31's on it.

I still want an m5od, and was wondering what the latest year trans I could use would be.

The tech section alluded to "The early model manual transmissions have a shorter input shaft with the pilot bearing in the flywheel, while the later years are longer with the bearing in the crankshaft" but I cant figure out when exactly this change occured.

Is this a SOHC OHV difference? Or are there OHV's with the longer input shaft? Mine has its bearing in the flywheel.

Sorry if I'm asking a previously asked question, but I couldn't find any threads that pinned down the change's year exactly.

"Early" is a matter of perspective.

In this case an '88 is NOT early.

That information applies to '83-84's
