I have an 83 ford ranger i bought it about a year ago and it sat for about 6 months due to trackin a lost title. so here the last 4-5 months ive been drivin it fairly regularly and ive had to do some standard work for such an old truck clutch,cmc, csc, rebuild carb new wiring harnes under hood damn tweekers!!!. about a week ago i replaced a u joint and had a hard time getting the right ones did them all. now im startin to belive my rear axle, t-case, and tranny are from an 85 is there a good way to confirm this postulation

Well I believe some of the first rangers had the 6-7/8" axle but the most popular was the 7.5" axle out back and Dana 28 axle up front.

As for the transmission/Tcase all rangers up to 89/90 recieved the BW1350 transfer case and the A4LD (auto trans) or Toyo Kogyo 4 or 5 / Mitsubishi FM145 or FM146 (manual transmission. So the u-joints should be the same between 83 and 85.

there are some good pics of the trannies and tc's in the tech library here on TRS. should help you figure out what is in your truck. does you're long bed have the 2nd tank in the rear? my '83 sb, has the 7.5/d28 axles. i had a 5 speed swapped in from an '85 b2. like it much better than the old 4 speed. good luck with your truck.

i wish

i wish i had the second tank but im stuck with one leaky sob gotta get it fixed or replaced luckily its under the strap so its really slow maby a gallon in two three months but its noticable, and thanks for the tip ill have to mesure the rear and its the five speed so only one choice there

nope

not yet i wana wait till i get my part truck she was a bute till i went to the hills for the fist snow and some drunk ba@#$rd in a jeep got in a head oner with me luckily no one was hurt i had no ins on it so he waited till next day for me to transfer ins and i didnt say s&^t bout him drinkin. but i love the first gens they are so much stronger and bigger feelin than the newer ones and i love my old trucks

according to my Ford spec book, some axles were actually 6 3/4 through 1984 at least. most were the 7.5's though.
