Are the 3.0's equipped with a knock sensor, if so, where are they located. It is a 1999. Thanks.

No knock sensor that I'm aware of.

According to the manual Some of the Aeorstar 3.0's had KS, but its not specific on years. I have never seen one on a Ranger & the motor I got out of the Taurus did not have one on it either.

Nope. No knock sensor on your truck. To make matters worse, the 3.0 flex fuel engine has a tendency to ping. Look though the postings, their are a lot of discussions on preventing the pinging. You can check the EGR system, Sea Foam the engine, drop in some cooler plugs, clean the injectors, check fuel pressure, and {gasp} run a grade higher octane. There are more things you can try. Start with the basics, and work on from there.

An effective solution that many have found to the 3.0's tendency to ping is to install a lower temp (180*) thermostat. The intake manifold hot water bypass mod also probably helps, and if worse comes to worse a tuner will allow you to retard the ignition timing by a couple of degrees and that will definitely solve any pinging issues.
