Title says most of it. Truck couldn't do the engine running test w/ the code scan tool.

So, even weirder (maybe), now the truck won't do the KOEO test. Plugged the code scanner in set on 'hold', turned the key to on but not running, flipped the switch to test.... and nothing. Hmm. Started the truck, did a little 1-2 mile loop, tried to start the KOEO test again... and nothing. Relays didn't do their little clicky things, tester didn't make a sound. I've done the KOEO a few times previously so..... weird.

Thank you for that blissful misunderstanding of the post. It made me smile a bit.

His truck is a 1991, he is getting code 98, On-demand test failed to complete.

Clumzi, what kind of tester are you using?

Does that one have batteries or does it just run off the car battery?

Try taking them out, popping them back in, fire it up on it's own, hook it up to the truck, and get to the screen right before the test, then turn the key on and test it.

Sometimes the OBDI systems get funny.

I'll give it another whirl today after a little drive.

But why the 98 on the KOER test? What might be wrong w/ the truck so that it can't even run the engine running test?

I imagine this is normal, but when I flipped the switch from 'test' to 'hold' to unplug the thing the motor sped up and then settled back down. Did flipping the switch reset the computer? It'd make sense, that's what it does in the KOEO test.

My credo
One shot one Kill
the 12 volt plug on the right side of the radio is on the same circuit as the connection port, check the fuse if u have something pluged in to the 12v plug when u plug in the scanner ull blow the fuse, ive had this happen to me, hqad my phone plugged in, had a check enigne light come on took it to autozone, they tried pluging their scanner in said it wouldnt connect, so i checkd and change the fuses and it thats what my check engine light was for was loss connectin to DLC plug from pcm, fixed no check engine light

Sadly, the cigarette lighter never worked on the truck.

UPDATE: Based on the previous post I thought I'd check some fuses. With the key off I started pulling fuses to see if any were obviously bad. Pulled the 30a EEC relay plug - and it was still juiced! Plugged in back in and I hear relays clicking and clacking. Tried to run the engine off check again - and it worked! And a bunch of codes I thought I'd licked by putting the 60a fuse next to the EEC fuse in the correct damned spot... CAME BACK!

So I've got 14, 18, 31, 41 and 88. I bought the EEC relay a week or two ago and I was planning on returning it b/c plugging that 60a fuse in the correct spot seemed to sort the truck out, but it seems that it may yet be the culprit. Or... one of many culprits :).

While that is great info, it's not really relevant to the OBDI system.

Got the EEC relay out and the new one back in. Had to unbolt the power distribution panel and take the top of the airbox off BUT I WON DAMN IT! Really wasn't too terrible. When I reconnected the battery, no relay clicks and clacks like there usually is. Started the truck up and she ran fine.

And she has been running fine. I'm gonna drive her for a few days and then pull the codes again. CEL is still on but I think that's EGR related.

I'll post back what the scanner spits out this time and whether or not it can run the KOER test now.

UPDATE: So I'm pretty sure the EEC relay took care of the battery draining issue and also sorted out the code scan tool not working. Still haven't tried to do the engine running code check. B/c I keep getting the 18 and 88 codes together I took the ICM out of the truck and brought it to O'Reilly's. Tested ok 4 times in a row. Checked the wiring to and from the ICM - there was one little pin prick of exposed wiring that I taped up but I can't believe that'd cause any real issue.

Still stumped as to why the truck would keep spitting out 18 and 88.

I bought new plug wires b/c the ones in the truck still say Ford on them, so I'm guessing they're ~25 years old. Can't hurt but I doubt it'll solve my problem.
