Start up in morning and pressure is fine. In about 2 minutes the pressure drops to zero and a light tapping can be heard.
Shut it off for 30 minutes and crank up and pressure back to normal, then it looses it again.

Someone told me it could be a stopped up pickup, or the oil pump shaft is slipping.
never messed with the 2.9 and just wanted to heard what you know about this issue.

It should be either one or the other.. Don't run it any more until you fine the fault. You could install a temporary pressure gauge and try it again to see if it is the fault of your gauge system.. But only once if the temp gauge shows the same pressure. Below 10 pounds is hazardous.

Change your oil filter too...If your running a fram or other El-cheep-O filter...they can fail internally and starve the engine.

but agreed that it could be either of the 2 that you already suspect

I would guess is that were the problem it would be the connection has went away and you woud need either a new upper or lower shaft into the pump itself.. It could be that cold the connection holds for a short while and then gives up and stops turning the lower shaft into the pump at all..
FIRST thing to do is to make sure you are actually losing oil pressure.. It could be as simple as a wire or a sendor.

The tapping starts after it zeros out so dont think gauge is lying.

hell i dont know how hard the pump is to change but it might be worth your time and sanity to just do it. i dont mean to jack the thread but if fram is bad do guy recommend motorcraft or some other brand of oil filter.

Pump is 80 bucks and a real pain to replace. Hoping for a trick or 2 that will get me away from that.

it is rather unkikely that the oil pump shaft is slipping. Chances are your cam bearings are shot just like quite a few 2.9s

What are the symptoms of a bad cam bearing?
