What's a good way to bring up the low end torque(2500 rpm and below) of my 4.0? That's where I do 95% of my driving and it's a dog. I know that my 3.27 gears don't help and I run empty 99 and 44/100% of the time but I'm tired of the down shifting, upshifting in the hills of Western Pa. etc.plus when I'm in town, just when I get going something comes up like a stop sign, red light and I have to start all over again to get up to speed. It's 100% stock, 97
super cab, 4x4,5 spd auto. No codes. :temper:

if you still think its a dog after 4.10's get a diesel because no gas engine is going to please you.

the 4.0 is one of the lowest revving engines ford makes, theres not much you can do to move the torque band down even further.

personally, if you dont know how to drive a stick (and its obvious you dont if your lugging around at 1,000 RPM) then get an automatic.

Lower gears will help a lot, especially with the way it looks like your driving.

the 460's peak torque is at 2200 RPM, the OHV 4.0's is at 2400...not very far off.

by 1997, the 5.0 was putting out 274 @ 3200 RPM...making the 4.0 a lower revving engine.

Did you take up the slack in the throttle cable?? Before I did the zip tie trick my FX4 felt like a dog....mashing my foot to the floor for decent performance...now I just push it a quarter of the way down....much more responsive.
Try the zip tie trick here:

Also, try not to go below 2000 rpms....keep the rpms up and you'll be happy.

You pretty much have just a few options...gears, built motor, or boost

To All....Thanks for your replys. It is tuned as well as a driveway mechanic can do, It IS an Auto. I had an 86 4x4 w/2.9 Auto and 4.10's and I liked the bottom end but hwy. rpm was eating gas.I have a 97 Powerstroke 4x4 Auto w/4.10's and it has WAAAAY too much gear. I was hoping someone had experience in torque converters, chips, tire sizes,.Everything I see and read is for more TOP end power, for any vehicle you can imagine. I don't drag race the thing, I don't pull mountains towing with the pedal to the metal.I rarely Floor it, 5000rpm is virgin territory.I would get 3.50's or 3.70's but for a 4x4 it's twice the work and cost.I KNOW someone has an answer. I know how to get more low rpm torque out of a small block Chevy(Did I cuss here?) LOL.... but I have little experience on a Ford 4.0.

as i said before, the 4.0 is one of fords lowest revving engines...theres just not much you can do to bring the torque down even lower.

why are you so against letting the engine rev? HP produces less heat and wear than torque does and uses less fuel. theres nothing wrong with a little RPM's.
