I'm dropping the 5 speed trans out of my 92 ranger for the first time. I've got it up on ramps so i have enough room to work underneath. I'm going to take the cross member out that supports the transmission (obviously) but I'm a little concerned the transmission won't fit under the front axle once it's on the floor jack. I'm working in a gravel driveway on a sheet of plywood. Only have one jack so if it won't fit I'm kinda stuck.

Just need to know how tall the bell housing is?

I've only done 2wd manual trans, but putting each tire up on top of a standard cinder block gives you perfect height (holes go up and put a board between the ground and the cinder blocks). Holes up also lets you use a chunk of 2x4 as a chock at each wheel for safety, so it can't roll. Never use a cinder block any way except with holes up.

With your rear tires on the ground, I think you will have trouble.

I'd leave the crossmember attached to the trans until you get all the bell bolts loose/out. Gives you a way to prop the trans tail down to get the top bolts easier. Keep an eye in the engine bay as the engine will rise in there, look for fan and rear of engine clearance, AC lines, etc.

Thanks for the response. After the trans was down I slid it off the jack and drug it out on the plywood. Came right out :D Now step 2... Find all the problems with the dern thing!
