Hello all...

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 with a tranny that has completely fried. I got a quote for a refurb w/install for 3700.

My issue is the truck has 155000 miles on it and it may not even be worth it.

I can still manage to drive with the tranny like this but don't know how long.

The 4x4 went out .. I believe it doesnt lock in anymore.

Would you get the tranny replaced at $3700 or call it what it is and get what i can out of the ranger and get something new..

If you need more info let me know and thanks for the help..

Personally if the motor was strong I would keep it. Look into getting your tranny rebuilt, cost me 2300 for a total rebuild including labor vs. 3000 for a jasper replacment. Both had same warranty.

First of all, get a couple more quotes. Look to see if getting it rebuilt would be less expensive. I paid just over $2k to have mine rebuilt. Second, no one can tell you what your truck is worth to you. You just need to make sure the work done is worth what you paid for it and vice versa.

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!

Which is it? The tranny is completely gone or it works somewhat?
These transmissions have a lot of valvebody problems and a lot of times can be fixed without a rebuild.

The tranny is shot I think. It takes a while to go into reverse and sometimes when it is warm; it won't go into reverse at all.. I have to put it into first to get it moving sometimes.

It shifts rough in to second and slips very bad into third.. It won't go into over drive (5th) so I can't go over 50mph..

I did get a second quote on a rebuild and it was significantly lower.. Left it with mechanic hoping for the best..

Thanks for all the advice.. This is a great source for Ranger owners..
