I was just wondering what I need to buy when I regear my new Explorer 8.8. I'm doing from 3.55s to 4.10s, What do I need besides the R&P, crush sleave, and shims. New bearings? seals? Do I need to slap in a new LSD? Thanks

With asking this type of question, I would probably suggest seeking out a rearend shop to do the installation.

Axle gears are not something to take lightly, if any tolerances are missed by even a couple thousandths of an inch, the gears can self-destruct in less than 500 miles (or even the first time they're loaded). Many special tools (and experience helps too) are needed to do it correctly as well.

If you reeaally want to attempt it (you do have to start somewhere lol), I would start doing a bunch of reading on the subject of axle gear swaps. Randy's Ring & Pinion has a pretty well written booklet that can help get you started.

A great site with lots of gear pattern pics:

Hope that helps

Edit, 4.10 8.8s came stock in some Explorers '97-'01, might be easier to just get one of those instead.

Can't find one local, for the price I paid. And I plan on having a pro set it up, I just need to know what to pick up.

Gears and a master installation kit. A shop will already have anything else that's needed.

Sweet, thanks. Now I just have to clean it up and get all the parts together. And I guess its going to be me and my boss setting it up so I can learn since he has set a couple up before, and so its free.
