I bought an 89 ranger 4cyl 5 speed with a repuilt motor bored 60 over. It wont start. First the fuel pump wouldnt come on so I replaced. Then it started but shut off. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor to see if that was the new problem and its still the same. For some reason the coil only gets spark once and a while. I replaced the fuel pump 3 times and still nothing. If you turn the key like ten times then start it it runs for a minute and shuts off again. any ideas?

almost sounds like 2 different problems. I had to replace the fuel pump relay in mine because it was acting in a similar way- I had to keep cycling the key until i heard the fuel pump run. I think a worn out pump can put extra load on the relay and wipe it out.

You have to see if there is enough pressure on the fuel rail..

Just cranking the engine wont be sufficient to see if the fuel pump is bad.. because the ecu only sends a pulse to pressurize the rail and shuts off the pump until detects another rev of the engine

you could jump the fuel pump relay (pins 87 to 30) to see if the pump works

there are a lot of thing that could be instead of the fuel pump..

Your Inertia switch could be bad too..

It's under your dashboard attached to the firewall its a small black box with two wires, jump them to see if the switch its bad or you can reset the switch too.
