I'm going to replace the distributer and the pickup coil. Does anyone know how to mark it so I don't throw the timing off?

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I turned my crankshaft until the rotor was pointing to the position for plug #1. Then made a mental note of about where everything was positioned. Put the new parts back in the same position. You will still need to fine tune the timing. But that gets you close enough.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Keep in mind that the rotor will turn when you pull the distributor out, you'll need to remember -or mark- where it is once it stops turning. I'd pry the reluctor off and replace the stator unless you need the whole distributor, if the reluctor breaks it's cheaper than the whole unit. Whichever way you fix it the timing needs to be reset afterwards.
