Okay I think my pitman arm is broken. It's leaking power steering fluid slowly. I priced the pitman arm and it's $50 on fleebay but my mechanic told me I also need to buy a rack and pinion. I can't seem to find a rack and pinion anywhere. Does the ranger even have a rack and pinion?

My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
what year of ranger? I believe the 98+ have rack and pinion.

if you have a pitman arm then you do not have rack and pinion.

How exactly did you "break" the pitman arm?

From your other posts, I see you have a 1994 Ranger. You do not have a rack and pinion. Only 98+ trucks have a rack and pinion. You "think" you broke the pitman arm? If it is broken, you won't be able to steer the truck at all. In other words, you could turn the steering wheel and the front wheels don't turn at all. If that's not the case, then it's not broken. Find a different mechanic ASAP.

LOL, I'm sorry. That was what I mean. The pitman arm is leaking and I could see it leaking some ps fluid. There is a small crack in the pitman arm. I have a 1994 Ranger which explains why I can't find the rack and pinion.

I found an article on TRS about a buying a seal kit for it and fixing it.

Anyone had any experience replacing the pitman arm.

The Steering Gear Sector Shaft seal is what is leaking. You have to remove the pitman arm for access. Just replacing the seal useualy won't fix the leak, the sector shaft is worn and you need a reman steering gear assembly

i was laughing because you said the pitman arm is leaking...thats impossible...its solid steel

now as the post above me says its the steering box leaking...if its worn out youll probably have to change it to stop the leak

So replacing the seal won't stop the leak? I got an estimate from a shop changing the box (3.0 V6) and he wanted about $350. Parts and labor. Probably a re-man box. Does that sound about right? Thanks.

Looks like it'd be best to take out the radiator and pull it put the front. I've done ball joints and tie rod ends but never a steering box. What comes in a kit? Can you install the kit without removing the box? Probably not. Thanks.
