I'm getting a PO 401 code on my '97 ranger 4.0. When I start the truck it sputters and chuggs and will hardly drive. But after I let it warm up for a few minutes it clears out and runs just fine. Last summer I replaced the egr valve, solenoid and the DPFE switch when I was having the same problems. I think I need to clean some stuff out but is that all it would be??

Restriction in the EGR passages, usually caused by carbon buildup
Lack of a proper vacuum signal to the EGR Valve from EGR Vacuum Solenoid, EGR Vacuum Modulator is defective, EGR Temperature Sensor is defective, EGR Valve is defective.

Id start with vacuum, do/get a tester and find out if you in spec with that, also ive gotten faulty parts before from a parts store may want to check your DPFE. Try cleaning out some of the carbon buildup in the EGR tube. And dont forget to unhook your Neg battery cable so the ECM can "relearn" to any new electronics you hook up.
