I've got a 98 3.0 4x4. I dont know what gears i have. I just wanted to know if the ring gears are pressed onto the housing or if they come off with a little pressure applied

when you take your third member out all the gears will come out with it. but why do you want to take out your gears to see if what ratio they are?

I need to take the ring gear off because the spider gear pin snapped. you have to take off the ring gear to get the new pin in.

When you say "third member" you mean the ring gear right? Or am i using the wrong terminology here. I've always known it as the ring gear.

If he has a 3.73 axle it's unlikely that the spider gear cross shaft is removeable with the ring gear still on the carrier.

haha yeah, i was holding the peices of it in my own two hands. No one that i've told about it has ever herd of it happening either.

All i know is that the end that the holding pin goes into somehow cracked all the way through the spider gear pin. Then it started dropping out the other side and was bouncing around.

I looked it up and it is the 3.73 axle. I just need to get the ring gear off and then i'll be good to go.

I'll probally just end up takin the whole pumkin into the Ford dealership and letting them put it all back together. Unless i get some anwsers here

"Third member" refers to the entire center section of the rear axle. It does not include axles or housing. Some call it a "pumpkin.":)shady
