When the ac is put in the max mode, I know it recirculates the air from in the cab, but where is the intake located for the max setting? Does it get sucked in at your feet and then blown back out through the vent?

Also what causes the idle to jump up when the compressor engages? IS it the load on the motor, or something in the computer?

Not 100% sure where the air inlet is on your 89 but it's usually up behind the glove box. The computer bumps the idle up with the IAC valve to keep it from stalling or dragging the idle way down when the a/c kicks on.
