So this weekend I replace my valve covers. Everything went well as I assumed. I turned the truck on let it idle for a few minute . Went to check yay no oil leaks. Well when I put my truck in reverse it’s sputters, really low power wants to die. Same thing when in drive Then it slowly gains power and starts to accelerate then i start to hear poping noises . I drove for about 2 mins then back home. Got to the house cleaned mass air flow sensor ran the same. So I figured I maybe forgot to connect something. I go and check I see an unplugged wire. Now I need to figure where it plugs up to I feel like that’s the problem. Or what do you guys think ? I have have 94 ranger 4.0 manual.

Symptoms sound like the O2 sensor’s unpluged. Had to tell where that plug is, but it could be an O2 sensor plug.

I would assume there is a check engine light from driving like this. Pull the code and see what it says.
It’ll probably give you a code for out of range readings on a sensor, and I would bet it’s a plug for that sensor.

you may have introduced a vacuum leak in it somewhere. when it is idling nice and good, take some carb cleaner/ brake kleen and spray a few puffs around the engine. if the engine revs up a bit, that is the area of where your vacuum leak is.

Also check to see that the vacuum line is hooked up to the fuel pressure regulator (double whammy, vacuum leak AND fuel issue).

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I also vote for vacuum leak.

That wire may be a spare. I don't think it's O2 sensor. They should have 4 wires. 2 fir heater circuit and 2 for sensing circuit.

so I thought the same thing went to check both sensors and came back both sensors were plugged in . But that unplugged wires is coming with the set of wires leading to the O2 sensors

I just looked in my EVTM. It's for a 93, but should be similar. A two wire connector with a purple/yellow wire and a orange/yellow wire goes to the A4LD transmission for the torque convertor and the 3-4 shift solenoid. That is probably connector #117.

I think you need to find what that connector goes to. Use a flashlight, use a mirror, use a camera, use extention sticks on them all if you must. Reach, crawl, slip, slide, dolly under and all around it until that plug is matched with its mate. Then try again :)

It appears to what I can see the inside of that plug is cleaner than the outside, which would imply it was plugged in somewhere

It may been nothing but an oil light somewhere, it may also be possible the other end of it has been put on the wrong place

I can't tell exactly where that connector is, but does your engine have EGR?
