I am having a similar problem with a 1994 4.0 in my 88 Bronco II but mine does it off and on and when both cold and warm. You may want to clean your MAF sensor and also the IAC located off the intake. However, I cleaned both of mine with no change but have not checked to see if the IAC could possibly be bad. A quick start would be taking them off to clean them.
