Rustoleum bed liner any good?

I have a drop in plastic bed liner but the paint under it is taking a real beating, worn through in spots, and was thinking of this year doing a roll on liner as extra protection from rust and ware. Have you guys tried the Rustoleum roll on liner? It's cheap and will be covered anyways.

What I've read is that it's kinda too weak for real heavy duty use, and gets beat up by UV rays.

But.. if it's going to be covered and only see a "regular" amount of work.. then for the price it should be fine.

I want the roll on liner to protect the metal from the plastic liner that is rubbing on it. If it peals easy or wares easy it sounds like it may not hold up to a constant rub kind of thing I have going on. The plastic liner stays in and only comes out for an occasional cleaning under it.

Anyone else with experience with it?

What do you usually haul around in the bed? You could just do the roll on thing and ditch the plastic liner completely.

I've used it on several trucks. With all of these roll on liners it's all about prep work.

I won't say it was horrible but I'm going to do something with my current truck and I'm going to look at alternative products. It does fade in a year or so... but I used it from the lower bodyline down.... and plan to do it again. It also isn't super tuff... it will scratch and scuff with light to moderate use.

I keep a jack, oil pan, chain and some weight. I'd like to keep the liner since it's been in there since the truck was new. I just want to add a little more protection from the liner itself.

I like spray on bedliners as long as they're done right- remove the bed bolts first so they don't have to be dug out to remove the box. How about using POR 15? I've never had good luck with anything Rustoleum sells.

I have heard nothing but negatives about the Rustoleum roll on product. I have a feeling most DIY bedliner problems are due to improper surface prep, it's really critical to obtain solid bonding. I'm going to be removing my over the rail plastic bedliner this Fall and spray the Raptor product kit on mine in blue. I have seen 2 completed Raptor jobs from friends and theirs look awesome. I also like the color choices Raptor offers. The spray kits will give you a more uniform texture if appearance is important. Again, be it it paint, POR-15(can't take UV exposure), or any protective coating...surface prep is always the key element.

Sounds like I should keep looking for a more durable one. Fading should not be an issue with the tonnue cover and the liner but durability is key for what I want.

Any cheap alternatives?

Yeah... your hard bed liner will most likely rub right through it.

I know a couple local guys that removed their bedliner and sprayed a light coat of motor oil in their bed every few years, then reinstall the plastic liner. It protects the surface and lubricates between the two surfaces that are constantly rubbing together. All in all not a bad idea in my opinion.

Although I'd probably scrub and wash it out every couple years due to the accumulated grit that would build up.

Heculiner isn't any better. I used it in the '98. Where is was exposed to the sun, it faded and flaked off. The stuff protected by the cap held up better but like others have said about the Rustoleum liner, it doesn't take abuse well. It seems one can't go cheap with bed liner and have it hold up.

Honestly, if you are looking for something that is durable, you may be better off looking into a spray on professional job. I had a Line-X installed about 10 years ago, and it has held up extremely well. It has faded ever so slightly, but otherwise its perfect (no peeling, gouges).

might be cheaper to pull the bed liner every coupler years and slap some fresh paint down with a brush.

I’ve painted most of my truck beds with a brush and some rustoeum because it is cheap and I can easily redcoat when needed.

We've used several different roll on products over the years to coat floor in our generator bays. None of the roll ins held up and this is in a bay with no UV rays hitting it. The Raptor spray in seemed to hold up the best but still didnt hold up like a professional spray in. If I was gonna do anything my self it would be a Raptor spray in.
