So, I swapped in an 8.8. Looked at the available uptravel space on my driveshaft slip joint and thought "That looks like JUST enough, parhaps I'll tend to that another day"

MISTAKE

Went out wheeling, flexed and climbed hills and other such stuff. No problems. Then I drove over 3-4' windrow of snow and BOTH back tires went up into the wheelwells, not just one. And there was a terrible noise, well, it wasn't that terrible, I've heard worse. I kept going.

1 mile later I had smoke seeping up through my custom (rag) t-case shifter boot. I broke the back of my t-case to bits and it was slinging oil on my exhaust.

Trailered home, threw in a junkyard ($200) t-case, and now I can limp around.

Anybody have a 7.5 and an 8.8 beside each other in their garage so they can tell me how much I need to shorten my driveshaft?

i was under the impression that 7.5 and 8.8 trucks used the exact same driveline.

FYI, i have seen the rear part of 1350/4's fail before. its not common, but its happened on more than one occasion.

Yeah, I've had an 8.8 shaft next to a 7.5 shaft and they were the same.
